The Vehicle Design Masters program at the RCA held its annual degree show a few weeks ago, showcasing an array of transport designs created by the graduating class of 2008. In all, 18 students - including three PhD graduates - developed projects which dealt with the current issues of accessibility, aerodynamics, environmental impact, ergonomics, legislation, materials, production, safety, and technology, as well as the aesthetic principles of vehicle design. Peter Stevens - the first MA graduate - David Wilkie of Stile Bertone, Alfonso Albaisa of Nissan and Peter Shreyer of Kia were just some of the RCA alumni in attendance.
NO Jaguar SUV says Ian Callum
Jaguar design boss Ian Callum has stated that Jaguar are NOT planning an SUV but could build a crossover. Ever since Jaguar’s Brand Director Adrian Hallmark said that Jaguar needed a crossover there’s been much speculation (from Cars UK just as much as elsewhere, we confess) that a Jaguar SUV is in the planning, despite Land Rover’s pre-eminence in the field. But it looks like we should have listened more carefully to Adrian Hallmark, who actually said Jaguar “…need a crossover and we need to stop being a saloon-based company.” We all leapt on the ‘stop being a saloon-based company’ bit as confirmation an SUV is planned when Adrian actually meant a crossover and not a full-blown SUV.
Remember the Ford Mondeo Vignale concept from Frankfurt? It's basically a posh Mondeo, but Ford would like us to think it's a bit more than that. Vignale is Ford's attempt at going upmarket – taking on German premium brands with 'Vignale lounges' in special dealerships and specially trained 'relationship managers'.
